The eyewitness account -forthright and unsparing- provides a well-documented expose' of the sabotage of police reforms (to be implemented as per a verdict of the Supreme Court of India) by certain bureaucrats and by some members of Kiran's own service. These persons also blocked her appointment as police commissioner.
This kind of sabotage was the proverbial last straw that compelled her to 'shake off the shackles'. After a long and rewarding innings (35 years in all), Kiran Bedi decided to move on. She believed that she could no longer work with the persons who were keeping the system enslaved. She was clear in her mind that she was not going to be subordinated by this team of saboteurs. What direction and leadership such persons provide except to create pygmies and stifle initiative and crush morale? She did not want to be a part of such dubious 'history'.
As she asserts: 'My self-respect, my innate sense of justice and my beliefs and values in life propelled me to throw off the "yokes" that were already obstructing my growth and I now made up my mind to set myself free and be a master of my own time'

This book tells of the transformation of one of Asia's largest jails-Tihar prison. Before Kiran Bedi became the warden of Tihar in 1993, it was a hellish place where 8,300 inmates in a prison designed for 2,500 lived with corruption, gang wars, illness, filth, and hopelessness. Today, thanks to her stunning reforms, it is more ashram than prison.
Half the book is devoted to a detailed account of the situation Bedi found when first appointed. The other half is devoted to describing the process of "human interaction" that she emphasized was key to bringing about the transformation. By the time Bedi left there were councils in each ward, self-governance by prisoners, daily activities like yoga, literacy programs, playrooms for children, a university course, and most important of all, Vipassana meditation. Bedi describes the tools she and likeminded colleagues used to bring order and peace out of chaos and despair. Interspersed with conversations from inmates, this book is a powerful story of redemption, faith, and hope for a better future. It can serve as an inspirational guidebook to all who wish to overcome enormous obstacles.
It depicts the concentrated efforts of Kiran and her 3 C model (corrective, collective and community based) which resulted in success of an awesome task - transforming the mindsets of human beings.
It has three sections, the first being, 'What existed' which describes the conditions which prevailed in Tihar, when Kiran took charge. The second section, 'What evolved' describes the holistic transformation of the prison system which put Tihar on the road to reforms. 'What emerged', the third section of the book, is a graphical representation of the methodology followed for changing Tihar.
The book has a foreword by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Released in September 1998, the book has entered in its seventh reprint edition. Kiran has traveled widely in order to share her model of correction depicted in the book. It has had many city releases in the country. The book has already been translated and published in two Indian languages, Hindi and Marathi. It's Always Possible has been released in eight cities in the US, the United Kingdom and at the International Book fair at Harare, Zimbabwe. Kiran was specially invited to visit the prisons of Australia and to release the Australian edition of the book. The book also has a Bangladesh edition.
This rare documentation of a candid account is accompanied by a CD-ROM (produced by India Vision Foundation) with selected excerpts from the book, supplemented with powerful visuals, ranging right from the historical Vipassana meditation program wherein over a 1,000 inmates sat for ten long days in meditation to their festivities, educational programmes and visits from NGOs. This has been further complemented by the prisoners expressing their feelings on camera, their written petitions, poetry, paintings, art and craft, besides the statements of the staff. A graphical portrayal of the holistic process - a metamorphosis - from criminality to humanity was achieved within the same legal framework

*All proceeds of this book will continue to go to Navjyoti and India Vision Foundation, for education of the children in need
Kiran Beth, in her usual bold and candid style, shares wide ranging issues which have angered, inspired, or fascinated her. Through her matter of fact style of writing, she draws her readers into situations that they may either not have access to or may tend to ignore. This book is a persistent effort by the author to instigate greater awareness about various social and ethical issues in the hope to invoke, provoke, and inspire readers to heightened levels of sensitivity, participation, and response.
In Kiran's own words "What do I do with all that I see, hear, read and observe? I can ignore, forget, complain, postpone or whatever. For me it became a need to write what ' touched ' me the most. Hence I committed to write the weekly and fortnightly columns for The Tribune and Punjab Kesri and accept requests from others as well. These then became ' Reflections' of the frames of my mind. These range from my police service, national concerns, women's issues, ' volunteerism ' , education, leadership, governance, patriotism, etc.
At the time of writing, I put my head and heart in each piece that I wrote. And after doing so, I felt like a bird , free to fly ..
Of what value is my writing to others, I do not know. But I needed to write and say in words, what I saw and I will continue to"
