Inspector General of Police, Chandigarh

Kiran got posted as the Inspector General of Police to Chandigarh - beautiful city, a capital of two states i.e. Haryana and Punjab, and also a union territory. She knew the city by heart as she was postgraduate student at the Punjab University.

Not only people of Chandigarh admired Kiran as a police officer, they had great fondness for her as she was a well known tennis player and an outstanding student. People warmed up to her in no time, and she, to the city policing.

Within 41 days of her posting there (the shortest stint she has ever done), she put the city in order. She brought back the police men from duties outside the city and all women police officers back to the police stations. She strengthened the police stations, re-instituted the beat system and improved police welfare. She streamlined police control room response systems. Moreover, she started visiting the police stations herself at 9 a.m. daily.

In addition, she got people involved in policing, invited student participation, strengthened policing in the slums and the weaker sections of the society. She got all NGOs of the city dealing with women and child issues to participate in crime prevention.

Proving true to her nickname "Crane Bedi", she got the cranes to stream line traffic flow, toughened traffic enforcement, and removed encroachments from the roads.
